The University of Nigeria has been ranked first in Nigeria in the field of Law in the 2026 SCImago Institutions Rankings, reaffirming the distinguished standing of its Faculty of Law in legal education, research and scholarship.

In the 2026 SCImago University Rankings for Law in Nigeria, the University of Nigeria occupies the No. 1 position nationally and 478th globally, ahead of other leading Nigerian universities.

The achievement is particularly significant because SCImago is not based solely on reputation or perception. Its ranking is determined through measurable indicators assessing institutional performance across three principal areas: Research, Innovation and Societal Impact.

Under the SCImago ranking methodology, Research accounts for 50 per cent of the total score. This category evaluates scientific output and excellence through indicators such as normalised impact, excellence with leadership, scholarly output, scientific leadership, high-quality publications, international collaboration, open-access publications and the scientific talent pool.

Innovation accounts for 30 per cent and measures an institution’s contribution to knowledge transfer and technological development. Its indicators include innovative knowledge, patents and technological impact.

The remaining 20 per cent is allocated to Societal Impact, which assesses an institution’s visibility and broader contribution to society. Relevant indicators include media mentions, web presence, authority score, contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals, the female scientific talent pool and impact on public policy.

The ranking reflects the sustained commitment of the Faculty of Law, University of Nigeria, to rigorous research, high-quality teaching, interdisciplinary scholarship and meaningful engagement with contemporary legal and policy challenges.

It also recognises the collective contributions of the Faculty’s academic staff, researchers, students, alumni and institutional partners, whose work continues to strengthen the University’s national and international academic profile.

This outstanding achievement further positions the Faculty of Law as a leading centre for legal education and scholarship in Nigeria and underscores its responsibility to continue producing research that advances knowledge, informs public policy and contributes to national and global development.
